A Comparative Study of Rolled Patterned and Float Glass Technologies for the Photovoltaic Market

The project will present a comprehensive evaluation of the manufacturing, performance, and techno-economic viability of rolled patterned and float glass for c-Si PV modules to inform stakeholders who may be planning investments in the U.S. domestic PV glass supply chain.

As of 2026, a gap exists in photovoltaic (PV) module manufacturing and supply chains in the United States in domestic glass manufacturing for crystalline silicon modules. Crystalline silicon modules have historically used rolled patterned glass. However, manufacturers sometimes also consider float glass, especially as they employ thinner glass in PV modules. This project will provide insights into why the crystalline silicon PV industry is currently dominated by rolled patterned glass and address some common misconceptions about glass patterning.
